The GAO ( government accounting office) has no real enforcement powers, its head is a civil servent, appointed

by the same government it audits. Should the Head of the GAO be elected like many states who have state auditors are? SHould they also be given enforcement powers so that they can prosecute abusers of the taxpayers money?|||The DoJ, I believe, prosecutes government employees who embezzle. With all of the issues of sovereign immunity, I don't know what an independent auditor at the federal level could "prosecute" when policy choices are made on how federal government money is spent. Further, how would anyone run a national election for federal auditor? It would be exceedingly expensive.

But it's an interesting concept considering how much pork and waste have become issues recently.
